About Haiyan

I am a fully qualified teacher of both English and Chinese, with extensive international teaching experience. Trained at a Chinese university for four years as a qualified English teacher GTC-registered Chinese teacher in Scotland Four years of experience as a lecturer at a Chinese university Over 20 years of experience teaching at St Leonards School - a UK international school, specialising in IB and IGCSE programmes 10 years of experience teaching a variety of courses for the University of St Andrews Evening Chinese Programme Experienced in teaching A-Level and Scottish Higher courses Skilled at teaching both native and non-native speakers across all levels

About the lesson

My lessons are designed to be engaging, interactive, and tailored to your individual needs and goals. Drawing on my extensive international teaching experience, I create a supportive learning environment where students feel confident to speak, practice, and make progress. Each lesson combines clear explanations with plenty of opportunities to practise speaking, listening, reading, and writing. I use a variety of resources—authentic materials, multimedia, and practical exercises—to make learning both effective and enjoyable. Depending on your level, we might explore Chinese culture, literature, and current events alongside language skills, helping you develop a deeper understanding of how the language works in real life. Because I have taught everyone from complete beginners to advanced IB, IGCSE, A-Level, and university students, I can adapt my approach to match your pace. Whether you’re preparing for exams, improving your conversational Chinese, or studying for personal or professional reasons, I will guide you step by step towards your goals. Most importantly, my lessons are dynamic and student-centred—you’ll be actively involved, using Chinese in meaningful ways right from the start. My aim is to make every lesson a positive and motivating experience so that learning Chinese becomes something you look forward to.
