About Shawn
I am a practicing civil engineer with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. My graduate studies focused heavily on geotechnical engineering and soil-structure interaction.
For my master’s research, I analyzed data from a full-scale seismic shake-table testing program involving individual and grouped helical pile foundations installed in dense sand. My work included evaluating pile bending moments, lateral response, system damping, soil behavior, and the effects of fixed versus pinned foundation connections under simulated earthquake loading. This research also contributed to published work on the seismic behavior of helical pile foundations.
Professionally, I have experience in both geotechnical and structural engineering, with much of my career focused on structural analysis, towers, wind loading, foundations, and practical engineering calculations.
I enjoy breaking complicated engineering problems into a logical sequence and explaining not only how to solve them, but why the approach works. My combination of graduate research and real-world engineering experience allows me to help students connect classroom theory with the way engineering problems are actually evaluated in practice.
I work with civil engineering students and FE Civil candidates who want to strengthen their understanding of structural, geotechnical, and foundation engineering concepts while developing a more confident and systematic approach to problem solving.

I focus on helping students understand the reasoning behind engineering concepts rather than simply memorizing equations and procedures. My goal is to break difficult problems into clear, manageable steps and help students develop a problem-solving process they can apply independently.
I hold both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Civil Engineering. My academic background is especially strong in geotechnical engineering, while my professional experience includes structural analysis, tower structures, wind loading, foundations, and practical engineering calculations.
A typical lesson starts by identifying where a student is getting stuck, reviewing the underlying concept, and then working through representative problems together. I emphasize understanding assumptions, selecting the correct equations, using reference materials effectively, checking units, and determining whether an answer is reasonable.
I can help undergraduate civil engineering students with subjects including statics, mechanics of materials, structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, foundations, and related engineering coursework. I can also work with students preparing for the FE Civil exam who want help understanding concepts and developing a more systematic approach to solving exam-style problems.
What sets me apart is the combination of graduate-level engineering education and years of practical engineering experience. I can help connect what you are learning in class to how engineers actually approach problems in professional practice.
