About Tom
I'm Tom, and I'm currently studying Civil Engineering at the University of Bath. I chose Engineering because I wanted to apply my favourite A level subjects, Maths and Physics, to real life problems and use them in a creative way! I feel that the first year of my degree has taught me to approach maths problems in a different way, so that I can now offer different perspectives to more complex GCSE and A level maths problems. I've recently completed a 12-month Civil Engineering placement where I made use of the skills I've learnt in my degree, my A-levels and GCSEs everyday! I completed my GCSEs in 2019 under the 9-1 curriculum so I am familiar with the course and how to respond to specific questions, such as what the examiner is looking for, however I would like to teach maths and physics not only in a way that is tailored to exams but so that you can gain a full understanding of certain topics to progress further in the course. After studying for my A levels mainly through online learning, I understand the importance of valuable virtual lessons and being able to communicate well over a screen.

Initially, I like to go through some past exam papers relevant to the exam board and subject so that I can see what areas of study the pupil is struggling with and where they can improve. It's good to ask what the student needs some help with, but through going through exam papers I find it easier to see other areas and causes for why they are struggling. I like to plan detailed lessons around these topics that I'll discuss with the student so we can practise these skills, and then every few weeks we can carry on with past papers so that they can practise a range of skills throughout!
