About Toshi

Learned to play by ear over 25 years through sheer motivation and love of being able to play. Currently, I produce music, perform (occasionally), record guitar, and teach.

I learned mainly by learning how to play songs by my favorite artists and guitarists such as: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Guns N' Roses, Joe Satriani, ... (the list is quite extensive)

I've taught a handful of students of various levels over the years, from those who've never played music and want to learn chords to those who were revisiting the guitar and wanted to learn blues improvisation.

About the lesson

Pedagogically, I believe in curiosity-led learning. That might mean learning how to play a certain riff or song and at other times may become more theoretical - ex. "Why do these notes sound good with these chords and not others?". The key is to gravitate around your interests and curiosity.

These lessons are for:
1) Beginners who want to learn the basics of playing guitar and chords;
2) Beginners/Intermediate guitarists who want to be able to play electric guitar and lead
3) Guitarists of all levels who want to become better at improvisation (*I do not do jazz improvisation)

A typical lesson starts by briefly going over the focus for the lesson and how we're going to approach it.

This might be based on:
- A longer term goal such as learning how to play a particular song or technique;
- Something that you're curious about and want to explore in more depth;
- Improving upon an area that you're currently struggling with.

While the main chunk of the lesson itself may be different and tailored to your preferred learning style, the goal is to always walk away with something new, as well as things that you can do to practice and improve in that particular area until the next time.
