About Alex
It’s fair to say I love languages, and I really enjoy sharing my enthusiasm with others! I have a high 2:1 in Classics and Spanish from Durham University, 3 A*s at A-Level in French, Spanish and Latin, and my 4 highest GCSE grades were in French, Spanish, Latin and Greek (all 9s), so my knowledge of the languages is as comprehensive as my love for them. (I also won the Latin prize at both GCSE and A-Level, and have a deeper knowledge of Latin literature, especially Late Republican and Early Imperial.) I therefore have both the desire and the ability to teach others about the languages that have formed an integral part of my education, and to show people where languages can take them!

Hi, I’m Alex, and I tutor Spanish up to A-Level and Latin up to GCSE. Having done GCSEs and A-Levels, I am familiar with the mainstream exam boards - AQA, Edexcel and OCR - and so tailor my teaching to their requirements, whilst also enabling you to appreciate the joy of languages in and of themselves. Having studied languages for around a decade, I have also learnt what does and does not work so well in terms of teaching, in particular how concepts and rules can often be taught in a simpler, clearer way than textbooks present them, so I make them as easy as possible to understand. I also think that the student should have as active a role as possible in learning, so I generally opt for the Facilitator method: I am of course there to explain if you get stuck, but my aim is to ask the right questions in order for you to learn as (pro)actively as possible. Learning is also often a very individual activity, so I tailor my teaching to you and your goals and abilities. Please do reach out if you are interested, and I can’t wait to hear from you!
