About Beatrice

Hi, I’m Beatrice, and I’m excited to help you start coding! I’ve been teaching programming for 7 years, and 5 of those have been live online. I earned my B.S. in Computer Science from Kansas State University and hold the Python Institute PCAP and Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE Programmer certifications. I completed Code.org’s teacher training for K-12 computer science. Before teaching full time, I worked for three years as a software developer at a Wichita aviation technology company, building Java tools and writing SQL for maintenance reports. I’ve coached a high school robotics team, taught introductory programming as an adjunct instructor at Butler Community College and mentored students in a free after-school coding club. I’m proud of a nine-year-old who built a Scratch game about a flying airplane, of a high schooler who made a flight-tracking website for her school’s tech club and of an adult career changer who finished a portfolio of three working projects. Students tell me I’m patient, friendly and make coding feel doable.

Hello and welcome! I teach coding to every grade from kindergarten through 12th, plus college and adult learners, starting with Scratch and visual block coding for young beginners and moving on to Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS and Java for older students. Students come to me for a school coding class, AP Computer Science, a game or website idea, a robotics or contest team, a college intro course or a skill for work, and I’m glad to help with all of it. I also teach SQL and the basics of AI, and if your language or topic isn’t listed, message me and I’ll tell you honestly how I can help. Lessons are live and one-on-one on Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams with screen sharing. At the start, you pick your Goal Ladder step: learn a new idea, fix a program, get ready for a test or build something. If anything feels confusing, say “rewind” and I’ll explain it again in a new way. Wichita is famous for aviation, so our signature project is the Flight Logbook App. You build a program that records flights, adds up the hours and draws a simple chart, and you can grow it into a website or a game. You need a computer with internet, and I’ll help you set up a free tool in the first lesson, while younger learners can start on a tablet. I teach in Central Time with early and evening slots for other US time zones, and a parent or guardian stays nearby for younger students. To start, message me your grade or age, what you’ve tried and what you’d like to make. Your free trial lesson comes first, and afterward I send your code and a few next steps.
