About Simon
I have been teaching most of my working life and in doing so my interest has been about how we learn more than what we learn. I have also taught programming to degree level and I am an experienced programmer. Since the advent of AI coding I've rediscovered fun with code in terms of how fast we can put things together and why it sometimes doesn't work very well. In the process I have learned how to 'code prompt' which is the knowledge I am offering to share. I am currently developing an educational teaching assistant app with scalability for future integration with an LLM base model and other AI tools.

A computer programme is merely a logical sequence of instructions with do-this events and produce-this results. You can also learn to read it, it's just like a weird kind of English. Most computer languages can be read and understood by someone who understands standard programming syntax. Then, there is AI to assist you and it will tell you how it works and it will also write your code. I know some that have tried and it gives you so much code that it overwhelms you. It also and often doesn't deliver, with logic-based errors that are hard to resolve. But what if you could read the code in that weird English and also understand it enough to reply to your AI code assistant - 'what if we use case-switch?' Such an instruction can make a big difference in terms of working towards a solution. In other words, learn how to think like a programmer and break things down into small steps with precision prompts can take you quite far. In this course we start with a web page and begin by using AI to do this for us. We then take a quick look at CSS, so we learn how to create a fixed or dynamic user interface. Then there is the code and this is JavaScript which will be our focus language. We will also use Python and write a few programmes by 'raw coding' in order to better understand how code works. There's quite a lot to understand for a novice and this bit requires a bit of graft, however the more you get it, i.e. code syntax and procedures the more ambitious you can be and that mad looking code syntax you first saw can be read like English because modern day programming languages were designed that way. Ideally, I would prefer to develop group sessions for interaction and feel it would be a better learning environment and would consider higher level one-to-one coaching for those familiar with code.
