About Andrew

I would like to be your partner in learning because for 19 years, I have helped students to develop their understanding of biology, and more important, learning skills through one on one conversations. Students and I have had great fun working together and many have come back to see me on their spare time just to "talk biology". Learning can and should be enjoyable. As a student at Skidmore College I learned that dedicated and caring teachers could educate me in subject matter while simultaneously improving my ability to investigate my interests and becoming a better and more efficient learner. This is what I want for you- to develop a solid foundation of knowledge and the learning skills so that you can learn quickly and independently as you progress through your education. Skidmore served me very well after graduation when I became a research associate at Progenics Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where I studied the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1) and helped develop and produce drugs for clinical trials. I found I could learn complex aspects of the virus and its replication quickly because my professors developed my knowledge AND my ability to apply my knowledge to scientific subjects that fascinate me (which was and still is virtually everything!) From Progenics I earned my Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology from Cornell University- and being disappointed in the "sink or swim" attitude there I decided to teach college students so that they would be prepared for graduate education and a life of learning. For 19 years I taught biology from the freshman to senior levels at Marist College. I've since left Marist and formal teaching with the goal of doing what I believe I was best at: working with students individually, helping them develop learning skills, and showing them that they know more than they think they do by showing them that they can use their knowledge to understand complex current events in biology. I look forward to working with you.

Our sessions will be highly interactive, dynamic, enjoyable. My goal is for you to improve your understanding of biology and become a more efficient learner. In a typical tutoring session we will begin by assessing what you know and what you need to know. As we work together your ability to assess yourself will improve so that you can become an independent learner. During almost two decades of helping students one on one, I have found that the most effective and enjoyable ways of helping students involves learning my students' interests, answering student-questions, and asking questions of the student. Crucial to your success, we will tie our subject of study to current events in science, thus linking what you "need to learn" to what you WANT to learn. You will be learning through enjoyable conversations in biology, and our ultimate goal is that you will be able to talk about biology as easily, skillfully, and excitedly as you talk about your favorite music, tv show, video, fashion trends, games, sports, etc.
In addition to our "conversations in biology" other sessions can include exam preparation and exam review.
I seek to help individuals who are in their first biology course through college.
