About Matthew
I love to teach and to build things with my hands. I have added full rooms onto houses from the ground up, built a robotic flapping wing for my research, visualized airflow in a wind tunnel, and led students to propel a table-tennis ball faster than the speed of sound. I take every opportunity to make teachable moments more engaging so students become comfortable with the subject when I'm not around. The most advanced physical mechanisms can almost always be explained by simple ideas, and I pride myself in bringing those challenging topics to an easily reachable level (and not be dry while doing it). My video lectures during the pandemic were hailed as the best in the department and of the few that students would routinely take the time to watch.

We experience physics way before we learn how to use it. Applied math, physics, and engineering are how we explain the fascinating world around us. Concepts introduced on paper can mean a lot more when we use them to describe everyday life, and I thoroughly enjoy finding the real-world examples of where and how to apply concepts. I'm successful at this in math, physics and most thermodynamic and aerospace related courses, ranging from high school to college levels. Watching students make connections and build their confidence working with the material is what drives me to be an educator.

1-hour sessions do not allow for a significant amount of material to be covered, so I encourage planning for at least 90min, if not more. I usually allow 2-3hours for sessions when scheduling in case the student wants to continue longer.
