When working with a new student, I usually start with a few ice breakers. I ask them simple questions like what's their favorite color, what movies and shows they are currently watching, or what music they listen too. I do this because I want to create a connection and bond with my student. After all, they are more susceptible to learning when it's coming from someone they are more comfortable with rather than a stranger.
Next, I would ask them what type of method they learn best in (visual with drawings, auditory with a lot of explaining, etc.), and if they are unsure, then it will take some trial and error to find the best method.
From there, I would ask them to explain to me what they learned in school and take roughly 5-10 minutes, answering questions, and having them attempt at a couple of problems before going over them together.
Personal online tutor currently attending my first year of college at California State University Fullerton. I went to a college preparatory high school, graduating summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA. I have been tutoring students since I was in middle school when I volunteered to help K-5th graders with their math and English homework. I continued tutoring throughout high school, and by the time I was a senior, I have taught a handful of underclassmen and helped them with homework, proofreading essays, and study for tests and quizzes. With my help, many students were able to improve not only their test grade but their overall class score as well. I work to not only help students understand the material but also gain confidence in the work they are doing.

I have sought assistance from many writing and English tutors in the past, but Kirsten has been the best I’ve ever had! She thoroughly looks over every part of my essays and gives suggestions on how to make my writing clearer and flow better; she never forces me to oblige by her corrections. Above all, she believes that someone’s essay/paper/etc should be as unique to the writer as possible, and this philosophy is clearly evident in her teaching style. Even so, her keen analyses catches any and all grammatical mistakes I make, giving me the chance to correct them and securing me an A on all my papers. There is no one I’d give a higher recommendation to, and I will definitely be using her expertise again in the future.
