About Estrella

I began drawing to express myself much before I could write. So, since toddlerhood, I've been mainly utilizing art to both express myself and also to engage in its therapeutic effects. I had been told that my skills were advanced for my age ever since I was a kid, so I consider this a "natural" talent, if you will. I began dabbling in realism between the ages of 10-13, which is when I started developing an eye for details and measurements. I am currently 19, so I have had quite a few years to develop such a skill that allows me to produce with my hand well what my eyes see.

My method of developing these abilities was to essentially practice a fundamental skill over and over again. For example, when I wanted to recreate and draw a photo of someone, I would draw until my art reflected the appropriate proportions to replicate the image. This process could either be complete first-try or after a million tries, but I hardly ever let myself give up until I got it right. So far, I have drawn a multitude of faces and figures, where at the moment I have a strong conceptual understanding of human features and anatomy, as well as how these can be manipulated through art to create individual people. Or for shading, to give another example, I would utilize various references that show strong contrast to understand how lighting works with different subjects until I was able to apply the understanding without the help of references.

As stated in the "lesson plans" section, I am completely self-taught. This means I have never taken a proper art class, nor is it actually something I'm looking to pursue in my career. However, this does not take away from the fact that I have spent countless hours refining my abilities over these last years. Let this not discourage you from considering me a tutor!

While I am not familiar with conventional art classes and teaching styles, as I have never been involved with them, I am confident that I have the abilities to pass on my understanding of art onto my future students to help them become far more proficient.

My goal throughout these lessons is to greatly advance technical skills, because I would love for others to find the same joy and love that I have for art. It truly is amazing being able to create and feel proud of what you are capable of.

I plan to teach how to create portraits/figures, as well as how to produce art based on a reference (photograph, life, still life). These classes will not quite focus on using various mediums hands-on, because I find it a priority to understand the fundamentals before translating knowledge into art. I may still discuss the differences between mediums, if the student would like me to. Graphite pencils will be enough for these sessions, though mechanical can work, too.

What sets me apart from most tutors is that I am completely self-taught. Because of this, I understand well the challenges that come with learning art on your own, especially the process of finding techniques and approaches that work best for you.

The way I would work with the student is by keeping such in mind: I would begin our first tutoring lesson by getting a feel for their abilities, understanding where they are proficient and where they may need more refining. From here, I'd create a specialized plan for improving their skills, where I would introduce techniques and such that I feel will guide them toward developing their own way of creating art (and which would also provide them with a flexible foundation they can carry into whatever artistic styles, mediums, or forms of visual expression they choose to pursue).

I plan to teach beginner artists, or artists who find themselves struggling with the fundamentals such as shading, proportion, details, etc.
