About Mikayla

My main tutoring is done on studentvip where you can see my reviews and message freely.
I work in a Brisbane lab sequencing gut microbiomes to develop health reports. My master's research involved DNA metabarcoding of pollen from native stingless bees. During my undergraduate degree, I worked as a UQ tutor for CHEM1004 and ANIM2053. I have tutored since I was an undergraduate in 2017, and I have had ~40 different students over the years and have seen many through multiple semesters.

I am patient and compassionate and I understand that study can be a very difficult time. I have lived experience through myself or loved ones with ADHD, autism, mental illness and the LGBT+ community, and I encourage you to be open about any struggles affecting you or your study if you wish.

About the lesson

I offer online tutoring for first year biology and chemistry.
$50 for an individual session, $70 for groups. This is to cover an hour session and the time it takes to prepare notes for the session.
I am happy to negotiate on pricing as I don't want anyone to be disadvantaged due to finances.
Online only, sorry.

I am available between 9am and noon on weekdays and on weekends on request.

I understand the students can feel like all their content is jumbled facts which they need to remember, and then they often find themselves overwhelmed. I tackle this problem by looking at the concepts and seeing how the components all connect and helping the students understand each part separately and as a whole. This helps the student actively learn and make connections in their long-term memory. After each concept, I ask the student to explain it back to me, as this helps to retain the information as well as allowing me to see what they have learnt. I know how stressful studying can be, and I promote a calm atmosphere and provide reassurance and positive feedback.

What you can expect:
I'll ask you to email your lecture slides or class topics and any other relevant information to help me prepare for our session. I'll complete my own notes to help us to through the content, with a focus on understanding and breaking down complex ideas. You will also gain access to these notes to keep, usually by OneNote. I'll ask for any feedback to my teaching style so we can adjust and set you up for success!
