About Dallas

I am a composer, educator, and interdisciplinary artist. I hold a Ph.D. in music composition from the University of Utah, a Master of Music degree with concentrations in music theory and composition from East Carolina University, as well as a Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance and music theory (with a minor in jazz studies) from Newberry College.

I first started studying music in middle school, where I learned to play the clarinet in my school's concert band. In high school, I began playing the saxophone in marching and jazz band, and continued throughout my undergraduate studies. Upon entering graduate school, I began composing and analyzing music more seriously, and also began teaching undergraduate music theory courses and worked as an audio recording assistant. Courses that I've taught include music technology, music fundamentals (beginner-level music theory), musicianship/aural skills (levels I-IV), music theory (levels 1 & 2), music appreciation, and American music. I previously managed the school of music's tutoring program while studying at East Carolina University, and have multiple years of experience working as an audio engineer.

I recognize that there are a wide array of teaching philosophies, and many that remain effective in their own unique ways. I have always been a proponent of the integration-based pedagogical approach, where I help students consider intricacies of all aspects within particular topic or subject, as they are often connected and related to each other. In the case of music theory, this often means exploring an approach that combines aspects of written notation and aural listening. As a tutor/teacher, my goal is to help students understand why something is important, and how it connects to other related musical aspects. Why is scale degree 7 usually called the leading tone? Why do we call the most common type of minor scale "harmonic" minor? These types of questions are often best understood by not just the theoretical aspects, but also by listening to how things sound.

I'm also a major proponent of the "helping/teaching so that one can help oneself" approach, and thus I often help students by asking questions that (hopefully) will drive them towards an answer that will allow them to understand concepts internally, and apply their gained knowledge to challenges that they may encounter in the future.
