I find that a systematic and logical approach paired with perseverance is fundamental in improving one's problem solving skills and thus, their grades in mathematics/physical sciences.
In my lessons, we will work on tough problems whilst filling in any gaps in knowledge. The emphasis will be on developing a good approach to questions and I will provide gentle guidance and hints to make sure students are getting the support they need, whilst they improve their problem solving skills.
