About McKenzie
I have been playing the violin for… 25 years now! I studied at Utah Tech University under the direction of Paul Abbeg, PhD. I’ve played as the concertmaster, principal 2nd violin, and principal viola in multiple symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras, theater orchestras, and chamber ensembles, as well as appearing as a guest soloist in a number of performances. I’ve worked in masterclasses with world-famous artists, including Ralph Madsen, Frederick Moreau, Alice Lourdes, and Jenny Oaks Baker. Having taught violin/viola/cello for the last 15 years, I’ve had hundreds of students, all of whom I’ve enjoyed working with and getting to know. I just love people and am excited when I get to share in their moments of discovery.

Hey! A little about my style… My style of teaching is essentially to assist discovery and encourage risk-taking in a very comfortable manner. Learning should be fun and enjoyable, while also stretching the student to accomplish goals and reach new heights. It’s a tricky balance, but important and effective if done right. I’ve taught hundreds of students, and I’ve never had any issues with students disliking my approach.
My approach: in a typical lesson, I spend around 2/3 of the lesson working on technique and the last 1/3 on applying those techniques to musical expression. Throughout the lesson, I work on teaching the student how to structure their individual practice sessions for the most effective outcome, because that’s really where the magic happens. Greatness isn’t taught, it is discovered through many hours of focused practice. The last thing you want is to go over the same stuff again and again with little to no improvement, right?
I would say my strengths as a teacher are my patience, and my ability to approach a problem from many angles until something clicks. I will warn you that my emphasis on technique is considerable, moreso with adults than with children, but that’s the stuff that really makes you grow, so if you’re looking for the fast-track to playing like a champ, look no further!
My classes are for anyone who is capable of moving their arms and answering the question, “Why do you want to play music?” So, all ages and skill levels welcome!
