About Jack

Mathematics has taken me around the world. I have been tutoring first-year university mathematics students for 4+ years at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, and coordinating other courses, such as aerodynamics. I love to teach. My experience with teaching higher-level mathematics offers a unique perspective on the high-school curriculum and how it fits into the grander tapestry of the subject. Back in high school I was an accelerated student, completing my Mathematics Advanced HSC exam in Year 9 with a mark of 98. Later, Extension 1 and 2 with a mark of 96 and 94, respectively. Overall, I graduated with an ATAR of 94. However, I can tell you that these numbers don’t mean a thing when you’re really interested in something – I’ve met incredible mathematicians and engineers that come from a variety of different backgrounds. I completed a double degree in Aerospace Engineering and Mathematics, with a thesis exploring the connections between geometry and the structure of fluid flow. Among other things, I worked for a couple of years as a research engineer developing algorithms to predict pregnancy stillbirth risk from ultrasound images and I’ve traveled to conferences in Dublin and Manchester to present my findings. Last year I was accepted into an Advanced Mathematics program at the University of Barcelona, however, I chose to use my time over there to learn the language and explore some of my other interests instead. Now that I’m back home I want to teach what I love and pass my passion on to others.

Believe it or not, mathematics is a bit of a social activity. Mathematicians develop their understanding through conversations over lunch and arguments in front of a whiteboard. The discipline itself is one giant dialogue across centuries, always changing and critiquing itself. The point is that we all struggle with mathematics at different levels (for mathematicians it’s the best part). I teach based on this philosophy – that a good understanding of mathematics (or anything really) comes from developing the confidence to challenge the ideas yourself and to ask the right questions. I want to help you to think like a mathematician first. The marks will follow. My online lessons could run anywhere between 1-2hrs at $30/hr. We can use the curriculum to direct the long-term course of our lessons, however, we will pay close attention to the concepts that you're particularly stuck on. I find that it's best to give some motivation for each challenging concept and how it relates to everything that we already know, then to spend some time working through some related problems. As I am refamiliarizing myself with the high-school curriculum we will find ourselves working things out together. Most importantly, I try my best to create a relaxed environment where you can feel comfortable to ask anything that you wish. There are truly no “dumb questions” – I ask them all the time, as a student myself.
