About Connor

# About Me

I’m Connor Nitchals, an interdisciplinary researcher, classical pianist, and independent scholar with interests spanning education, psychology, behavioral science, technology, and the sciences. My work is driven by curiosity and a belief that meaningful learning begins with asking questions, examining evidence, and developing a deeper understanding of how and why things work.

As an independent researcher, I have explored topics including digital behavior and adolescent learning, mental health and cognitive development, educational research, AI ethics and governance, public policy, and computational chemistry. My research interests reflect an interdisciplinary approach that connects ideas across traditionally separate fields.

Alongside my research, I have studied classical piano for approximately ten years and have developed extensive experience as a performer. I have competed at the state level as a pianist, earning a score of 79 out of 80, and have performed as a volunteer pianist and flutist. My approach to music is similarly inquiry-driven: rather than simply teaching students what to play, I encourage them to listen critically, evaluate their own performances, ask questions, and develop their own musical interpretations.

I currently focus on beginner and intermediate piano instruction, particularly helping students develop technique, musicality, confidence, and independent learning skills. I believe education is most effective when students are active participants in the learning process rather than simply recipients of information.

Whether I am researching human behavior, exploring a scientific question, or teaching a student how to interpret a piece of music, my goal remains the same: to encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the subject.

My approach to piano instruction is centered on inquiry, listening, and helping students develop their own musical understanding. Rather than simply telling students how to play a piece, I encourage them to listen critically to their playing, identify areas they want to improve, and think about how different techniques can change the sound and expression of the music. My goal is to help students become independent musicians who understand why they are making particular musical choices.

A typical lesson begins with the student bringing in a piece they have been practicing. I have them play the piece while I listen carefully and take note of areas that could be improved. We then discuss what they noticed about their own performance and work together to identify specific challenges, such as rhythm, dynamics, articulation, phrasing, technique, or interpretation. I provide constructive feedback and demonstrate techniques when necessary, while encouraging the student to experiment and discover solutions themselves.

What sets me apart is my combination of performance experience and an inquiry-driven teaching style. I am an award-winning state pianist, having received a score of 79 out of 80 in state-level piano competition. I bring the perspective of a performer while focusing on making lessons engaging, supportive, and personalized to each student's needs.

My lessons are designed for beginner and intermediate piano students. Whether you are completely new to piano or already have experience and want to improve your technique, musicality, confidence, and performance skills, I adapt lessons to your current level and goals.
