About Brayden
I’m Brayden Meng, a composer, violinist, and orchestrator currently pursuing my Bachelor of Music in composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where I study under Grammy Award-winning composer Mason Bates. My music has been performed at international festivals including YellowBarn and the Aranya Theater Festival, and I’ve received awards such as the Tribeca New Music Emerging Composer Award and the Berkeley Piano Club Emerging Artist Grant. Beyond composing, I’ve worked closely with world-class performers and ensembles, with premieres ranging from solo piano and string quartets to orchestra and choral works. These experiences mean I understand not just how to write music, but also how to make it practical, effective, and rewarding to perform. As a teacher, I bring the same level of dedication and professionalism to my students as I do to my own creative work. I believe in fostering a supportive, encouraging environment where every student can grow—whether you’re writing your very first piece or preparing a portfolio for conservatory or competitions. My goal is to help you build both the skills and confidence to bring your musical ideas to life.

My lessons focus on helping you develop your unique voice as a composer and orchestrator. We’ll work hands-on with your own music, reviewing drafts together, studying scores, and exploring practical techniques that make your writing clearer and more effective for performers. A typical lesson balances feedback on your current projects with focused skill-building—whether that’s writing idiomatically for strings, shaping choral textures, or balancing a full orchestra.
What sets me apart is that I’m an active composer with premieres at Interlochen, YellowBarn, and festivals around the world, and I bring that real-world experience directly into teaching. Because I’ve written for everything from solo piano and choir to unique chamber ensembles and orchestra, I can guide you through many different styles and instrumentations. These lessons are a good fit for beginners starting their first pieces, high school students preparing for conservatory applications, college-level composers refining their craft, or even performers who want to compose or arrange for their own instrument.
