About Maureen
I started teaching lessons all the way back in 2001 when I was a student at Peabody Conservatory. I have a bachelor's and master's from there and never stopped teaching in all this time! Through my time teaching I have explored the importance of listening to great music to guide our practice, playing along with backing tracks (I frequently make them myself) and playing with other saxophone students such as a saxophone choir. I focus mostly on classical music but I do occasionally work on pop or jazz with students. As a performer I am a very active recitalist in the DC area and beyond. I always have a solo recital coming up as well as frequent recording projects for CDs or videos. I perform with the Capital Wind Symphony which is almost like playing in an orchestra! Just like me I encourage my students to perform in the community frequently and try to create ways of doing that.

My lessons focus on the classical saxophone. I use the Rubank Method book as a starting point to understanding the "grammar," (theory, rhythm, patterns) of music. Then I focus on duets and solo pieces to put that knowledge into practice. These draw from classical literature so you can play the same music orchestras would play! For those who love jazz I can use the Eb Real Book to work on jazz songs, sometimes playing all of the parts of the song.
I specialize in serious students in middle and high school who are competing for things like all-state, solo and ensemble, or college auditions. I also work well with students who need mostly positive encouragement and inspiration. I look forward to working with you!
