I am a California Credentialed teacher and a product of the California public school system as a student with extreme ADHD. It was not a readily recognized condition in the late 70's and throughout the 80's and definitely not in girls. I knew my behaviors were not the norm, which in itself can be shameful, and I had to create adaptations in order to function, learn, keep friends, and to allow others their right to learn. I have had many students with ADD/ADHD and worked successfully in respecting their space and needs but allowing them to participate in all instruction and activities.
My teaching style is one of constant change and progress based on the needs of my students, whether social or academic. I have been an elementary teacher for 15 years and have worked consistently with students with ADD/ADHD. I myself was a elementary student with severe undiagnosed ADHD. It impacted me socially and I struggled to be what seemed to be the norm in the classroom environment. I had to modify my behaviors to succeed, but find it much easier when kids have an adult to allow them to be themselves and successful.
