About Zain
I am from Houston, Texas and am studying Public Policy at Cornell University. I have spent about 5 years working with children in various capacities including as a teaching/tutor and mentor. I have a diverse range of experience working with kids from kindergarten to 12th grade though generally work with kids up to 8th grade.
I enjoy exercise, reading, and video games. I am also a big football fan and love watching the Las Vegas Raiders. I am also a big talker and can and will talk about anything! I enjoy being silly and sarcastic sometimes. I enjoy having fun and I love finding ways to make learning fun!

My typical approach to tutoring is to make sure my student is happy to be learning. As someone who struggled in math when I was young, I know from experience that motivation is the key to a successful student. I have spent years tailoring my teaching strategy to connection with kids and find out what makes them excited and try to leverage that into their academics.
The lesson usually starts off with learning about the context of the student's day. It gives them time to vent or share something they are excited about and I get to listen, learn new things, and make connections. This is usually followed by either reviewing what we did previous to ensure retention or reviewing the basics of a new concept to make sure they understand the fundamentals.
As I get deeper into what I am teaching, I ask a lot of questions to make sure I am not going too fast or if I need to go back a step or two. I follow this up with some guided practice and I slowly let them take the lead till they can work without as much guidance. I will generally intersperse the lesson with breaks and quick games to prevent fatigue.
Ultimately my goal is to improve motivation, increase curiosity, make steady meaningful progress, then celebrate those improvements.
