A Statement of Beliefs
David Loring
“Self knowledge is the beginning of all knowledge.” –Ancient Proverb
To motivate students and build a sense of relevance, I ask students to see the agenda of a course through a lens; namely, I tell students that the reason to study (English) is because it represents the ultimate choice between people using language or violence to solve problems. The classroom is also a place to become enthusiastic about discovering and sharing ideas, opinions, hopes, as well as one’s own intellectual and social potential. Mark Twain wrote, “The man who hasn't read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them.” In their textbook on literacy skills, Readers, Teachers, Learners, William Brozo and Michele Simpson wrote, “Using language makes us think, and writing makes us use language.” I invite students to free-write and discuss these and other ideas as a place to begin to understand why literacy skills are important. For, to begin with, the classroom is the place to begin making choices between language or violence, self-control or disorder.
I also ask students to approach their education as I do; namely, as a rite of passage, a test which must be passed if they want to achieve personal goals and belong to a greater community, whether it be professional, economic, social, etc… Reading, writing, and academic thinking skills are humanistic labors that help us move from ignorance to knowledge, immaturity to maturity. So, we must be determined to pay our dues to become what we want to be and, perhaps, better than what we currently are.
Finally, the classroom is a place of exchange. Is teaching just a matter of telling students what they need to know and learning just a matter of recall, or is teaching transformation of the self? It is both. Among other intellectual and social changes, the goal of my classroom is that a change has occurred in the balance of power; that is to say, students are expected to gain not only knowledge and skill, but self-awareness, self-reliance, and self-confidence.

Welcome to Creative Critiquing: Once a teacher, I am a past master at recognizing patterns and potential in the written word. It is a passion. With that in mind, submit any genre and I will offer constructive criticism; for example, two wishes and a star: two or more things one "wishes" to improve and "stars" for that which stands out as effective:
Along with constructive criticism, the other service provided involves the intellectual discussion based on your work, and the Socratic small talk between you and me which leads to observations, insights, and further inspiration.
