About Gabriel

Hi, I'm Gabriel. The violin is usually taught as a strict, follow-the-page instrument, and somewhere in all that precision a lot of players forget it's one of the most *expressive* instruments ever made — closer to the human voice than almost anything else. I love teaching it as exactly that: a way to say something, not just a set of notes to get right.

I've been playing for years, and what's kept the instrument endlessly alive for me is how much it can express — the way a single line can be shaped and colored and made to feel like *yours*. That's the thing I most want to give my students. Technique matters enormously, of course, but it's the means, not the goal. The goal is to play in a way that actually moves people, including you.

And I want to be clear: expressiveness isn't a gift reserved for a talented few. It can be developed, with encouragement and a solid technical foundation to stand on. So I'm patient, I don't judge, and I'm just as glad to guide a nervous beginner as to help a more advanced player rediscover the freedom and feeling that strict training can squeeze out. If you've ever felt like you can play the notes but not quite *sing* through the instrument, that's the journey I most love to guide.

Whatever's drawn you to the violin — a love of its sound, a longing to play expressively, or simple curiosity about where it might lead — I'd be glad to help you find your voice on it.

About the lesson

I like to begin by getting to know you and what you're hoping for — the music that moves you, whether you're here for the pleasure of it or reaching toward something more. There are no wrong answers; I just want the path we take to lead somewhere you genuinely want to go.

We'll build the foundations carefully, because on the violin, expression without control quickly turns into frustration: a comfortable, relaxed hold, a free bow arm, dependable intonation, and a warm, singing tone. None of this is busywork — every bit of it is what eventually lets you play *freely*. Good technique, to me, is never the destination; it's what makes real expression possible.

And expression is where I love to lead students. The violin is one of the most vocal instruments there is, capable of genuinely *singing* — so beyond playing the notes accurately, we'll work on shaping a phrase so it breathes, playing with real feeling, and even stepping off the page now and then to play by ear or try an idea of your own. Classical training too often leaves this out, and I think that's a shame; I'd rather you learn to interpret and make choices, not just reproduce. I'll always be honest about what needs work, but kindly, and with a clear next step each time.

Progress comes from small, steady, encouraging steps rather than heroic effort, and it's a joy to hear a player's tone and expression open up over time. So we'll keep it enjoyable, celebrate the wins, and move at your pace. Wherever you're starting, my aim is for you to do more than play correct notes — I want you to sound like *you*.
