About Jacob
While attending UCLA, I served as a private tutor for elementary age students as well as Division 1 athletes, while also earning my degree in education. I received my multiple subjects teaching credential at UCSB, as well as my Masters in Education. While originally credentialed in California, I have also received my teaching credentials for Oregon.
I have worked in a variety of educational settings for the past 9+ years, including public, charter, and private school districts. I have worked with students from grades K-8, both as a private tutor and teacher, and have experience teaching all of the core elementary subjects (math, language arts, science, and social studies). In addition to a multiple-subjects teaching credential, I am also a certified Montessori teacher. As an educator who has experience in many different teaching settings (and with many different teaching philosophies!), I am able to meet the needs of a large range of students at the elementary level.

While originally trained in a traditional educational institution, much of my educational philosophy is centered around Montessori ideals, including designing instruction around the needs of the student and providing a variety of learning strategies to guide student learning. After an initial pre-assessment of a student's abilities (done through a combination of conversation and written assessment), I aim to have my students develop a fundamental understanding of the subjects they are studying. This means that rather than just learning the quickest or simplest solutions to a given problem (i.e. memorization), the student and I work together to understand the "why". Discussions regarding a student's thinking are regular parts of a given lesson, as I aim for my students to show their understanding of a given concept through oral and written work (or even through multi-media, music, or other non-traditional expressions of learning!). I believe that it is important that students have the opportunities to express their thinking in a variety of ways, while at the same time, connect their learning with other subject areas and interests in their own lives.
