About Karen
My main objective as a teacher is to help my students discover their own abilities and talents through the skills that I teach. I strive to make sure that my students are equipped with communication skills to be successful in the real world.
Teaching has been my passion for over 30 years. I started at a young age working in a tutoring center, then obtained a bachelors and masters degree in Education. Even during the time when I was not professionally teaching, I sought opportunities to volunteer my service of teaching while I raised my children. My heart belongs to the teens and young adults, but I enjoy teaching elementary ages.
I genuinely enjoy analyzing the human experiences that is expressed in literature, art, and film. I also teach film and graphic design to high school students. In these classes, they are challenged to create visuals for the imaginary world they have in their mind. I love guiding them to make their mental vision real. They are all so very talented and have much to contribute to the world.

My lessons are personalized according to individual needs. I start with a skills assessment and consult with the student about desired goals. I then consider the most effective learning style for the student, and determine what works well. I also relate all lessons to communication skills needed in real-life. So English is not just literary analysis and writing essays. It involves the ability to articulate thoughts both written and speaking skills, and knowing how to critically think and process various issues and topics. So I show students how the skills in academic English classes such as reading literature and doing analysis, writing essays, making presentations, and class discussions translates into the communication skills in the real world. I do this for all levels of English skills.
On a personal level, my students have expressed how much the enjoy my class and they felt safe to learn in a non-judgement environment. I strive to make my classes fun and engaging--less lecture but more discovery for my students.
