About Dennis

Piano teaching for me is about more than just playing notes; it’s about connecting deeply with music and oneself. My teaching approach blends building strong technical foundations—such as finger independence, rhythmic accuracy, hand coordination, and sight-reading—with fostering expressive skills including phrasing, dynamics, and tonal control. I integrate music theory and improvisation seamlessly into lessons to deepen understanding and spark creativity. I adapt each lesson to the student’s interests and goals, whether that means classical music, jazz, or contemporary styles. One of the most rewarding moments in my teaching career was working with a student who struggled with rhythm; through patience and targeted exercises, they made significant progress and gained confidence to perform publicly. I help students establish personalized practice routines and set clear, achievable goals to maintain motivation. I strive to cultivate a nurturing, positive environment where students feel comfortable exploring their musical voices and growing as expressive, confident pianists.

About the lesson

Teaching piano is an art in itself, and I treat each lesson as an opportunity to help students find not only technical skill but artistic purpose. I start by building a solid foundation: hand position, proper technique, note reading, rhythm, and expression. These are introduced gradually and reinforced consistently, with exercises tailored to the student’s age, ability, and personal goals. But piano is more than patterns—it’s poetry, and I help students discover that by exploring the emotional language of music. We might take a single phrase and discuss its mood, its movement, and what story it might be telling. I integrate music theory as a creative tool, showing students how chords, keys, and structure shape feeling. This creates a deeper understanding that supports performance, improvisation, and composition. Students in my studio also engage with musical storytelling activities—reimagining classical pieces with new narratives, composing short works based on a feeling or image, or learning how film composers create tension and release. One student, initially uninterested in practice, became motivated when we began scoring animations and video game scenes. That spark of purpose changed everything. I also work on building resilience through consistent goal-setting, reflection, and process-focused feedback. We talk about how to handle mistakes, how to stay curious during plateaus, and how to recognize growth beyond perfection. I encourage students to record themselves, to share their music when they’re ready, and to see their development as something worth celebrating. Lessons are structured but fluid, guided by the student’s rhythm and imagination. Whether you’re learning Für Elise, an Adele ballad, or your own composition, I’ll be there to help you find your voice—and your joy—at the piano.
