About Janet
My love for Spanish grew alongside a genuine love for food, both discovered together during long, wandering trips through several Spanish speaking countries. Ordering meals and chatting with market vendors taught me more practical vocabulary than years of formal study managed on their own. Structured learning eventually caught up, but that early, appetite driven curiosity never really left my approach to teaching. That same curiosity now shapes how I introduce vocabulary to students today.
Working with food lovers alongside eager travelers means keeping lessons tied closely to real, sensory experiences rather than abstract topics. I never separate language from genuine interest, since vocabulary sticks far better when it's attached to something a student actually cares about. What I find most rewarding is hearing a student successfully order a meal or haggle at a market entirely in Spanish. That small, real world success often means more than any classroom exercise could.
I continue exploring Spanish through food and travel personally, treating every trip as an ongoing language lesson in itself. This keeps my teaching genuinely current and rooted in real, lived experience rather than textbook assumption. Lessons often lean toward whatever cuisine or destination excites a student most at the time. My hope remains constant, that students leave hungry to keep exploring both language and food.

Food lovers and travelers share a similar hunger, wanting vocabulary that actually gets used in kitchens, markets and restaurants rather than sitting unused in a notebook. Early lessons revolve around ingredients, cooking verbs and simple recipe instructions, giving students immediate, tangible practice. Travelers additionally pick up market bargaining phrases and polite requests, useful the moment they land somewhere new. Grammar stays practical throughout, built entirely around real, food and travel related situations rather than abstract sentence drills.
As vocabulary expands, students practice describing dishes, asking about ingredients and following simple spoken recipes read aloud during class. Food lovers particularly enjoy discussing regional dishes, since cuisine varies dramatically across Spanish speaking countries and sparks genuine curiosity. Travelers instead focus more on transactional language, ordering confidently or asking locals for recommendations without hesitation. I mix in short listening clips from cooking videos or market interactions, exposing students to natural, unscripted speech.
I remind students often that useful, specific vocabulary sticks better than broad, generic word lists memorized without context. Practicing language tied to genuine appetite or curiosity keeps motivation naturally high throughout lessons. Topics stay closely tied to real trips planned or meals genuinely enjoyed, keeping practice personal. My focus throughout remains practical, helping students speak Spanish they'll actually use somewhere real.
