About Chie
While my profession lies primarily in creative writing, my academic passion is the study of English literature. The combination of these two highly compatible interests uniquely enables me to assist people in highly personal works, such as a college application essay, as well as formal texts, such as an essay on comparative literature. This duality of the traditional and the experimental equips me to respond to a range of student needs, and consequently assists my students in growing these same skills of analysis and creative expression.

I learned my teaching method from my time at Oxford University, which uniquely specializes in one-on-one tutorials in literary essay writing. A typical lesson plan would be designed to prepare a student to write an essay about some given work of literature that the student has just read. To begin with, I'd discuss with the student the surprising or intriguing elements of the work - strong imagery, unique point of view, etc. Then I'd give the student time to synopsize the work in their own words. Once the bare plot is understood, I'd ask the student the central question, "What is it about?" and, collaborating with their response, direct them to key excerpts of the texts, asking questions to lead them to a personal realization of the essential theme and purpose of the work. Once this central theme is reached, the student and I would interrogate together the author's methods for communicating this theme, evaluating the degree to which these methods were successful. In so leading the student to construct a personal understanding and opinion of the text, the student will finally be able to design a thesis argument that relates essentially to the texts as well as their own interest in it. Such a lesson can be tailored to students of a variety of ages and experiences, from middle school all the way to graduate school. I still use this process to construct essays for my master's degree.
