About Luke Rimmo
Hey, I am Luke, a current freshman at Stevens Institute of Technology, USA; I'm majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a possible minor in Public Policy, alongside a Premedical Track (Yeah, hoping to become a doc (dream is to be a cardiothoracic surgeon), if luck permits, alongside being an engineer). I'm also pursuing an Associates Degree in Computer Science, alongside this! On a lighter note, am a crazy leaf collector, with my own personal herbarium I also love Model UN and debate, & would be the one person frivolously debating for hours on any possible topic under the sun. I have seen college students struggling with basics such as hybridization, or even naming inorganic compounds (not even organic). Therefore I would be focused on helping you understand the concept so that you retain it for life, and not for an exam. Well, don't you just feel that Biology & Chemistry is all about memorization? I felt the same, when I was in your shoes :) But trust me Chemistry & Biology, and Math for that matter, are amazing when you get to know what you are exactly learning. You gotta visualize bud :) and this can be achieved through exploring the topic in depth beyond the book. Do conduct experiments when you are at it! Having trouble with topics such as VSEPR, Crystal Field Theory, Molecular Orbital Theory, or even basics such as hybridization? Trust me I have seen first year college students struggling to remember such concepts too- Try this out: Create models of molecules using toothpicks and marshmallows. To do this, you will need: Toothpicks Marshmallows A flat surface, such as a tray or plate To create your models, follow these steps: Research the Lewis structure of a molecule you would like to model. A Lewis structure shows the arrangement of atoms and bonding pairs in a molecule. Using toothpicks and marshmallows, create a model of the molecule by attaching the marshmallows to represent the atoms and the toothpicks to represent the bonding pairs. You can use different colored marshmallows to represent different types of atoms. Assemble the model on a flat surface, such as a tray or plate. Once you have finished your model, use it to explore how the arrangement of atoms and bonding pairs in a molecule affects its shape. You can also use your model to predict the shapes of other molecules based on their Lewis structures. Wanna Know how you can see math? Here is an example: Explore the concept of slope by creating a ramp and rolling balls down it. Measure the slope of the ramp by dividing the height by the length, and observe how the slope affects the speed of the balls. Investigate the concept of a derivative by drawing a graph and cutting it into small pieces. Stack the pieces on top of each other to create a 3D graph, and observe how the slope of the original graph relates to the shape of the 3D graph. Experiment with the concept of integration by filling a container with water and measuring the volume. Then add small objects to the water and measure the volume again. The difference in volume is equal to the volume of the objects, which demonstrates the concept of integration. Satisfied? And also, for subjects like Biology, you don't need to memorize but to understand and visualize the protein synthesis pathway- after this try writing a lab report (short 1 paragraph) Same applies for chemistry where you need to understand how hybridization works, and how the compounds would look like as a result. The same goes for math, while integrating over an infinite series! Trust me, this will help a lot when you take Multivariable Calculus aka Calculus 3 in college That's most of my teaching strategy. I love to crack jokes while teaching, so as to keep the student engaged. I usually would also ask them to visualize and draw what is written on paper, to ignite their critical visualization aka spatial skills. I might sometimes go beyond the textbooks to explain a concept, so do bear with me! It is crucial as the textbooks don't usually explain the concepts in great detail, and sometimes you gotta know how the theory you are learning on paper is translating into real-world innovations! For me all subjects are interconnected, and this is what I hope to bring to the classes I would teach. When we are done for the day, we can also read through a science comics, or a good-old paper from PubMed. or IEEE or ACS/CERN Alongside the "regular teaching" I also hope that I would be able to, inspire you to conduct your own research in the subject you once hated :) I started out the same, and thankfully to my teacher I was able to publish a research paper in a journal as a high schooler, and also went on to write 2 other papers, currently in the copy-editing field. You will soon learn to love biology & math :)... or maybe learn how to create a small trojan horse from scratch & a virus-scanner within the field of CS. My class is usually intended for high school students but I can definitely teach middle schoolers too !! To have fun with thermodynamics why don't you build your own calorimeter ? Items needed: Two insulated cups or containers, such as foam cups or mugs A thermometer A balance or scale Water Ice A chemical reaction that releases or absorbs heat, such as mixing vinegar and baking soda To build your calorimeter, follow these steps: Fill one of the insulated cups with a known mass of water and measure its temperature. Place the cup with the water on a balance or scale and record its mass. Place the other insulated cup inside the first cup, making sure there is an air space between the two cups. Add a known mass of the chemical reactants to the inner cup and start the reaction. Measure the temperature of the water in the outer cup at regular intervals and record the data. When the reaction is complete, measure the final temperature of the water and the mass of the inner cup and reactants. Using the data you collected, you can calculate the heat of the reaction by using the equation: Q = m * c * ΔT Where Q is the heat of the reaction, m is the mass of the water, c is the specific heat capacity of water, and ΔT is the change in temperature of the water. This activity is a great way to learn about how heat is transferred and how to measure heat using a calorimeter :) Try it out, bud!

I wanted to take a moment to recommend Luke as a math teacher. Specifically, his ability to teach calculus concepts in a way that is visually appealing and easy to understand has been incredibly helpful for me.
One area where Luke really excels is in his use of graphic representations to help us understand difficult concepts, such as integration formulas. He would often draw out graphs and diagrams to illustrate the different steps in the process, which made it much easier for me to grasp the material.
In addition to his visual teaching methods, Luke was also very patient and thorough in his explanations. He would take the time to make sure that everyone in the class understood the concepts before moving on, and he was always willing to go back and review anything that we were struggling with.
Overall, I would highly recommend Luke as a math teacher. His ability to make difficult concepts easy to understand and his dedication to helping his students succeed have been invaluable to me. Thank you, Luke, for all of your hard work and support.I just wanted to express my appreciation for the amazing job that Luke has been doing in my biology class this year. As a 12th grade student, I have had a lot of different teachers over the years, but Luke stands out as one of the best.
From the very first day of class, he made it clear that he was passionate about the subject and committed to helping us understand and appreciate the complexities of biology.
