About Jay

Students and parents can feel confident knowing they’re learning from someone who has both excelled academically and proven themselves professionally. I graduated as valedictorian of my high school class and later earned my degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Carolina. I now work as a Building Engineer for the state, where I apply the same analytical and problem-solving skills I teach my students. These experiences shape my tutoring style: structured, reliable, and focused on real understanding. I bring the clarity of an engineer, the patience of a mentor, and the professionalism of someone dedicated to student success. These experiences allow me to explain concepts clearly, connect lessons to practical situations, and guide students with proven strategies for academic success. Students and parents can feel confident knowing they’re learning from someone who has excelled in the classroom and in a professional engineering career.

My Teaching Approach
- My goal as a tutor is to make learning simple, practical, and confidence-building. I break concepts down into clear steps, use real-world examples, and adjust my teaching style to match how each student learns best. Whether you prefer visual explanations, hands-on practice, or structured guidance, I tailor every session to you.

My Method & Techniques
- I start by identifying exactly where you are in the subject and what gaps need to be filled.
- I teach using straightforward explanations, guided practice, and real-life applications so you understand why something works—not just how to do it.
- I focus on building strong fundamentals first, then gradually move into more advanced skills.
- I give immediate feedback so you can correct mistakes quickly and build momentum.
- Every session includes examples, exercises, and time for questions to make sure the knowledge sticks.

A Typical Lesson Plan
- Warm-up review (5–10 min): Quick recap of what we learned previously.
- Core lesson (20–30 min): New concepts explained with clear, step-by-step instructions.
- Guided practice (15–20 min): We work through real examples together.
- Independent practice (5–10 min): You try a problem or task on your own to check understanding.
- Wrap-up (5 min): Summary, feedback, and your personalized plan for what to practice next.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
- I’m patient, encouraging, and focused on results—not pressure.
- I specialize in breaking down complex topics into everyday language.
- I personalize every lesson to the student’s goals, learning speed, and challenges.
- I make learning engaging and confidence-boosting, especially for students who feel stuck or overwhelmed.
- My approach is practical: everything you learn has a purpose and connects directly to your goals.

Who My Lessons Are For
- My tutoring sessions are mainly designed for middle school and high school students who want to build confidence, strengthen their understanding, and improve their academic performance. I also work with recent high school graduates who want a solid refresher before starting college, especially those who want to rebuild their foundation in key subjects or prepare for more advanced coursework.

I adapt my teaching approach to each student’s level—whether they need help catching up, staying on track, or getting ahead. My lessons support students who may feel overwhelmed, students aiming for higher grades, and students preparing for the next stage of their education.
