About Chris
As a data science facilitator at UW-Madison, I provide consulting services and teach computationally focused workshops that empower researchers to reproducibly analyze, model, and gain insights from data. I also lead a campus-wide machine learning (ML) community of practice that provides a space for both beginners and experienced practitioners to advance their knowledge of ML, share resources, and collaborate on research projects. My research background is in neuroscience, where I spent over five years using machine learning methods (e.g. deep learning, multivariate autoregressive models, clustering algorithms) to extract insights from high-dimensional electrophysiology (ECoG, multielectrode arrays) datasets.

All skill levels welcome. I frequently assist both beginners and experts -- happy to learn where you're at in your learning and career and help design a learning pathway to help you meet your goals. My teaching style involves a mix of code-along instructional sessions as well as guided assignments/projects to help you become an independent programmer and data analyst. Code-along sessions focus on building the foundation for a variety of computational skills of your choice including:
• programming (Python, R, Unix, MATLAB)
• version control & environment MGMT
• data visualization
• text analysis & NLP
• machine learning / AI
Projects and assignments offer an opportunity to practice your new skills as well as confront the challenges poised by analyzing and/or modeling noisy and complex real-world datasets. If you don't already have an idea for a project (e.g., a program you want to develop, a dataset you want to analyze/model, etc.), I will help you find something that aligns with your interests.
