About Dana

Hi! I’m Dana, a dedicated debate and public speaking tutor with experience creating and leading programs like The Debate Café, a free initiative supported by United Way BC. I focus on building confidence through real practice and supportive coaching. My lessons are interactive, student-focused, and grounded in partnership. I believe students learn best by doing—so every session includes speaking, feedback, and growth. About the lesson

My approach is rooted in the belief that students grow through practice—not just through theory or observation. Debate is a skill learned by doing, and I design every session to give students real opportunities to speak, make mistakes, and improve. I also believe in working with students as equals, creating a respectful, collaborative environment where their voices are heard and valued.

A Typical Lesson Plan -

Warm-Up (5–10 min): Drills to sharpen thinking and get comfortable speaking

Mini-Lesson (10–15 min): A focused look at one debate skill (e.g., framing arguments, tone, or refutation)

Main Activity (25–30 min): A structured debate, speech round, or partner sparring with coaching

Debrief & Reflection (10 min): We discuss what worked, what didn’t, and set next steps—together

I also encourage students to bring in their own ideas or goals so they can take ownership of their progress.

What Sets Me Apart
What sets me apart is that I’ve built debate spaces from the ground up—not just participated in them. From founding The Debate Café with United Way BC to leading my school’s debate club, I’ve worked with students at all levels and created welcoming, engaging spaces that emphasize growth over competition.

I focus on confidence through practice and partnership in learning. Whether a student is shy, skeptical, or already experienced, I meet them where they are—and help them move forward.
