About Lily
I love helping pianists push their musical boundaries and unlock their true creative and technical potential on the keys. I have two years of teaching experience and hold a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance. My background allows me to specialize in guiding advanced students as they prepare for rigorous conservatory level jazz piano programs like Berklee or Juilliard.
I am incredibly passionate about taking your advanced jazz performance, improvisation, and complex harmonic understanding to the absolute highest level. In my studio, we break down difficult concepts like advanced chord voicings, modal jazz improvisation, and intricate rhythmic patterns. I remember working with a highly motivated student who was preparing for a major university jazz audition but felt stuck using the same basic scales.
We adjusted their approach to chord extensions and worked on rhythmic phrasing to make their solos sound much more modern and dynamic. They went into their audition with total confidence and successfully secured their spot in the program. I believe that mastering jazz piano requires both a solid technical foundation and the freedom to take creative risks.
I tailor my lessons specifically to your high level goals and make sure you have a clear, structured path to success. We will work together to refine your touch, speed, and musical expression. My teaching methodology focuses on fostering deep creativity and helping you build highly structured musical ideas directly on the keys. We will explore essential creative skills like songwriting for piano, composing melodies and harmonies, and developing strong musical themes. I also teach students how to construct memorable intros and outros that give their songs a professional, polished finish.
This approach is wonderful for students who use music as a personal outlet to process their emotions and players who want to explore complex jazz harmonies. For example, I recently worked with a student who wanted to write a song for their family but did not know how to connect their random musical ideas together. We focused on building a simple four chord progression and created a beautiful, recurring melody that tied the whole piece together.
Soon, they had a fully finished song that they were incredibly proud to share with their loved ones. I prepare my students thoroughly for crafting their own original compositions so they can express themselves without limitations. I am fully committed to supporting you in excelling and finding your unique artistic voice on the instrument.
We will work step by step to turn your musical ideas into fully realized pieces of music. Together, we will make sure you have all the tools needed to compose your own musical legacy.
