About Sterlyn
I am a dedicated piano tutor with 6 years of experience teaching college-level students. Throughout my tutoring journey, I have successfully guided around 300 students, helping them build strong technical skills and a deeper appreciation for music. My teaching philosophy is shaped by flexibility, problem-solving, cultural sensitivity, and accountability, ensuring every student receives an experience tailored to their pace, background, and goals. I adjust my teaching pace and methods based on how each student learns best, spending extra time on areas like hand coordination or note reading when needed. When students face specific challenges, such as timing issues or difficulty reading sheet music, I identify the root cause and guide them through practical, targeted solutions. I also take care to understand each student's musical background and interests, choosing pieces and examples that feel relevant and engaging to them. Setting clear goals and tracking progress regularly is another key part of my approach, keeping students motivated and accountable throughout their learning journey. My lessons cover hand posture, note reading, rhythm training, music theory, and gradually move into sight reading and ear training as students advance. For those interested in performance, I also focus on expression and stage confidence. My ultimate goal is to help every student grow into a confident, capable pianist through consistent and supportive guidance.

My teaching approach for Piano, Music Theory, and Rhythm Training focuses on building strong technical skills while respecting each student's individual pace, background, and goals. With six years of experience guiding students, I have developed a methodology that stays structured yet adaptable to different needs.
Flexibility is an important part of how I teach. Every student progresses differently, so I adjust the pace, exercises, and focus areas based on their comfort level, spending extra time on difficult concepts like hand coordination or note reading when needed, and moving ahead when a student is ready.
Problem-solving is central to my lessons. Whenever a student struggles with specific challenges, such as timing, finger placement, or reading sheet music, I work with them to identify the exact issue and guide them through practical exercises and solutions until they feel more confident.
Cultural sensitivity shapes how I select repertoire and teaching examples. I take time to understand each student's musical background and interests, incorporating pieces or styles that feel relevant and meaningful to them, making lessons more engaging and personal.
Accountability plays a key role in keeping students motivated. I set clear, achievable goals and track progress regularly, helping students stay committed to their practice routine and see how far they have come over time.
My lessons typically begin with proper hand posture and finger exercises, followed by note reading and rhythm practice. I introduce music theory basics early, helping students understand scales, key signatures, and chord structures alongside their playing.
As students progress, I incorporate sight reading and ear training to strengthen their overall musicianship. For those interested in performance, I also focus on expression and stage confidence. My overall aim is to create a flexible, accountable, and culturally aware learning environment where every student can grow steadily and confidently.
