About Derek
Mechanical Engineer based in Glasgow. I've spent over 25 years in industry — marine engineering at sea, oil and gas, manufacturing and facilities management — and the last five years teaching engineering in further education, delivering SVQ, NC and HND programmes.
Tutoring privately is the part of the job I enjoy most. One-to-one, you can move at the right pace, chase down the exact thing that isn't clicking, and see the progress happen. I work with school pupils, apprentices, college students and adult learners returning to study, in person around Glasgow or online.

Every student starts in a different place, so my first session is mostly diagnostic — I find out what you already know, where the gaps are, and what's actually causing the difficulty. Often it's a missing foundation from two years earlier rather than the topic in front of you.
From there I work through problems with you rather than at you. I explain the concept, model an example, then hand it over and let you attempt one while I'm there to catch the slips. Past papers come in early, because exam technique is a skill in its own right and it's worth practising it long before the exam.
Where I can, I connect the theory to something real — a pump, an engine, a structure — because 25 years in industry has given me plenty of examples, and abstract equations tend to stick better when they're attached to something you can picture.
I'm patient, I don't rush, and I'd rather you asked the "obvious" question than nodded along. Progress is easier to sustain when a student actually feels they're getting somewhere, so I'll tell you honestly what's improving and what still needs work.

I came to Derek as my son was struggling badly with Higher Maths and not far off giving up on it. He worked out very quickly where the gaps were and went back to fix those rather than just drilling past papers. Explanations were clear and patient. Went from a lower grade in the prelim to an A in the final exam. Couldn't recommend him more highly.
