About Davin

I have broad direct experience and credentials in a variety of professions that I can use to give relevance and memorable stories to any history lesson.

Over the course of my career at various times I have been teaching classes on the Russian revolution, writing publications on the history of minority soldiers during WW2, analyzing the DNA of food products in a biochemstry lab, managing over 40 national nonprofit organizations, founding and teaching at rural schools in West Africa, splicing high-speed fiber optic cable networks, and running a multi-million-dollar company.

I draw on this knowledge to make my history lessons *real*, in a way that's memorable and directly relevant your life. In addition to making you a more knowledgeable personal overall, it also helps with your grades: being able to tie a historical narrative into concrete facts about modern daily life is an ideal way to impress any teacher and get you the grades you want.

About the lesson

Hi! My focus as a history tutor is to help you understand the broader picture of history as a narrative, not just a bunch of names and dates to memorize. This will help you do well in class because it's much easier to remember and retell an interesting and relevant story than it is to recite disparate unrelated factoids.

A typical lesson will involve a summary of what we plan to cover in that session, a touch-point of why it's relevant (to both your knowledge and your grades), the lesson itself, and a mini-quiz at the end where you will practice re-telling the lesson back to me briefly as if I were your student. This will give you some practice in writing concise essays and answers on complex topics, which is a critical skill for getting the grade you want in any history class.

I can customize my lessons to any grade level: I have taught classes and tutoring sessions for everyone from elementary school students to graduate school scholars and professionals.

Additionally, my knowledge of mathematics, biochemistry, programming, business, and engineering helps me tie the lessons into relevant real-world topics: history isn't just isolated facts from the past, it's a way of understanding how we got to the world we live in today.
