Although our sessions will address some of the technical aspects of making photographs, our primary focus will be on how to build a sustainable creative practice. That is, we will ask ourselves key questions about ourselves, about the place of creativity in our daily lives, and about the medium of photography.
Can taking photographs change us? Does the act of making photographs bring us into closer connection with the world around us? Do we become more attentive to ourselves and to others through making pictures? And what even are photographs? Why are they so different from other images? Is photography an art, a technology, or both? What is it about photographs that so affects, even obsesses, us? Is it helpful to think of them in terms of the traditional categories of painting (portraits, landscapes, still life)? Do we need special subject matter to make good pictures, or can we make work with the mundane, with everything that is around us? Is there such a thing as a “good” photograph?
Finding the time to create work can be difficult. Often, we want to make work, but find it difficult to start. We place all sorts of barriers in our way. It can be difficult to confront what we want, to deal with complex feelings of guilt or imposter syndrome. Our lives are busy and our creativity too often takes a backseat. But what if our creativity were to be reframed as something essential and life giving? And as something that, for all its importance, can be picked up whenever, even in the short spare time available to us? Forming habits and a consistent daily practice is good, but sometimes we just need to give ourselves permission to start something without too much pressure. Photography is the ideal medium for our busy lives. It only takes a moment to make an unforgettable image.
For students who are interested we can also talk about the history and theory of photography, looking to writers such as Roland Barthes and André Bazin, and to early photographers such as Fox Talbot and Atget.
We will also talk about what it means to materialise our images by printing them.
For photography students (school and university level) we can discuss specific projects and outcomes.
