After getting my PhD in health from Johns Hopkins University and through my teaching at various medical schools and schools of public health over the past 20 years, I have developed my approach by studying other health and wellness approaches, listening to my students and other clients and taking the best from each of those and then adding my own unique ideas, philosophies, models and resources. Bringing together and leveraging advances made in many domains, what is unique about my approach is that rather than relying on top-down, population-based approaches, I start from the obvious premise that each of us is unique with respect to our physiology, genetics, diseases, allergies, preferences, income, etc. and that my health and wellness courses should therefore reflect this bottoms up, one person at time approach. My courses also incorporate the following premises: (1) because the human body is a system of interdependent organ systems, health and wellness should also take a holistic, integrative, interdependent systems approach in which all of the drivers a person's health and all of that person's health and care data should be considered together as a system in which all of that data and those drivers are interacting to produce guidance options to health and care challenges; (2) among the most important of those drivers are the individual's social determinants of health, such as the strength of their social network, their access to housing, fresh food, exercise facilities, transportation, etc. and therefore should be considered in developing a person's health goals, care plans, as should the community-based entities that are available to help individuals address their particular health and care issues; (3) as the new field of behavioral economics has shown, it is also important to enable individuals use their data, tools and a health coach to find their own health goals and care plan and their own path to health, rather than telling them what to do; (4) because of advances in several domains it is now possible to provide each person with their own healthcare delivery system or their own 24/7 digital device accessible, evidence and community-based, AI driven individualized, integrated health platform. Finally, it is also important to involve students in their own enlightenment projects in which they focus on a particular health or care issue and go out to the boundaries of our knowledge about that issue and put together a community-based research hypothesis and project that could expand our knowledge of that issue and improve outcomes with respect to that issue.
