About Nate

My name is Nate. After completing my A levels in Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science, I began my undergraduate degree in Nuclear Engineering at the University of Birmingham. This was an incredible course that taught me not only about physics and engineering but also a great deal about myself and how I learn most effectively. Although I deeply valued my time in that field, I realised that it wasn’t the direction I wanted to take my life and career. This led me to pursue a more medical path — a decision that I’m very grateful for. I’m now completing my Master’s in Medical Physics with Radiobiology at the University of Oxford, where I’m focusing on radiotherapy research. This course has required me to dive into areas like biology and chemistry, which has reminded me what it feels like to tackle unfamiliar scientific territory. As a result, I haven’t lost touch with how challenging — yet rewarding — it can be to grasp new and complex concepts. Throughout my academic journey, internalisation and application have been two of my greatest allies. However, I’ve also learned that these skills flourish only when built upon a foundation of confidence — something I now see as essential to any student’s academic success and is something I hope to instil in all of my tutees !

I have been tutoring professionally for nearly three years, though my experience in teaching extends beyond that. Over time, I’ve developed a keen understanding of how to teach in ways that are accessible and engaging for students of all ages and abilities. My general approach is to tailor each lesson to the individual student, often allowing the session to take a more student-led direction when beneficial — even if that means spending less time strictly following the syllabus. As someone who learns best when I find a topic interesting and relatable, I believe that presenting material through an engaging, “real-world” lens helps students retain information far more effectively. While this method may not always be the most time-efficient, I firmly believe it is the best way for students to truly connect with the subject matter and thrive. Active participation and student involvement are therefore key aspects of my lessons. To consolidate learning, I typically incorporate exam-style questions at the end of each subtopic and sometimes set light “homework” tasks — such as watching short videos or completing a few practice questions — to reinforce understanding. Above all, I encourage curiosity and open communication: thinking out loud and asking questions (no matter how “silly” they may seem) are always welcomed and valued in my lessons. My lessons generally last around one hour, though I’m very open to extending sessions as needed — I simply ask for some notice in advance.
