About Colby
Colby Barrios is an LA-based Venezuelan-American writer and director. He is a 2024 Directing Fellow from the American Film Institute Conservatory. Having begun his career in comedy and produced over a hundred standup comedy specials, he finds interest in the comedic but also the questions that scare us the most. Barrios is currently developing a handful of feature films that explore deep-seated fears, horrifying comedy, and strange character relationships. He lives with his wife and his cuter-than-life dog, Lula.

One of my top priorities when teaching film is creating personalized lesson plans tailored to each student's unique goals and skill level. Every student is different, so each plan may vary greatly, but my commitment remains the same: to help you move one step closer to achieving your ambitions. My goal is to meet each student where they are and to champion their progress.
Drawing on my professional experience and graduate schooling at the American Film Institute Conservatory, I focus on enhancing skills in areas such as blocking, directing actors, screenwriting, collaboration, overall production techniques, and more. Additionally, I take a great interest and pleasure in Film Theory and Criticism.
My approach includes a mix of tailored feedback on your work, in-depth discussions on what could have been improved, guided pre-production planning, and targeted assignments designed to elevate your filmmaking abilities.
Above all, I'm genuinely excited about the opportunity to support and inspire others on their film journey. I believe deeply in the power of storytelling through film, and I'm passionate about helping you harness that potential.
