About Thomas
I am a mathematics tutor based in Auckland with several years of experience helping students succeed at both university and high school level.
Throughout my undergraduate and postgraduate studies, I worked as a tutor for both the mathematics and computer science departments at the University of Auckland, where I helped students develop their understanding of a wide range of topics. I have also provided private mathematics tutoring for the past year. Through these roles, I have worked with students of many different backgrounds and ability levels, from those struggling with the fundamentals to those aiming for top grades.
What I enjoy most about tutoring is helping students reach the point where difficult concepts suddenly make sense. Mathematics can be intimidating when topics are presented as a collection of formulas and rules, but I believe that with the right explanation and guidance, anyone can develop a strong understanding and confidence in their abilities. My goal is not only to help students solve the problems in front of them, but also to equip them with the skills and intuition they need to tackle future challenges independently.

My teaching approach focuses on building genuine understanding rather than simply memorising formulas or procedures. I work with students to identify the concepts they find difficult, break problems down into manageable steps, and develop the reasoning skills needed to solve similar questions independently.
Lessons are tailored to the individual student's goals, whether that means improving course grades, preparing for exams, catching up on difficult material, or extending their understanding beyond the classroom. I encourage students to ask questions and actively engage with problems during lessons, as I find that students learn most effectively by working through ideas themselves with guidance and feedback.
I have four years of experience tutoring mathematics and two years tutoring computer science at the University of Auckland, as well as one year of private tutoring experience. During this time, I have worked with students from a wide range of backgrounds and ability levels.
Lessons are typically an hour or 90 minutes long, although shorter or longer sessions can be arranged if needed. My primary experience is with university-level mathematics and computer science students, but I also have experience tutoring high school students and am happy to work with learners at different levels.
