I like to start lessons asking students what they are currently learning and asking how confident they are with the topic. If the topic is something they struggle with I will teach them through it then give them questions to answer to see if they understood. If they haven't then I will take a different approach i teaching. Other time i will ask them to list all the topics they remember doing and which one they find the the hardest and teach them a way to remember how to solve the topic
