About John
I'm a student at Duke University, where I hold a 3.9 GPA while double majoring in Economics and Political Science. Outside the classroom, I spent a summer as an investment banking analyst at Lazard, and I'm an incoming summer business analyst at McKinsey & Company. I mention this because it reflects how I approach teaching: rigorously, breaking hard problems into clear, manageable steps and focusing on real results under pressure.
That same mindset is why I love SAT tutoring. I'm able to diagnose exactly where a student is losing points and build a focused plan to fix it, rather than relying on busywork.
I'd also love to work with students on college counseling, where I have genuine hands-on experience. I helped a close friend with a 3.5 high school GPA plan a strategic gap year and get into Duke after the best school he got into (which he was not satisfied with), his senior year of HS, was Wake Forest. I've also advised several friends who went on to earn admission to Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, and Brown, largely by helping them strengthen their extracurricular profiles, application essays, and personal statements.
I take this work seriously, show up prepared, and care about helping students reach outcomes they didn't think were within reach.

My lessons are for high school students preparing for the SAT, at any starting level, whether you're trying to clear a certain cutoff or push toward a top score. I work on both the math and the reading and writing sections, and I know the new digital format very well.
I teach diagnostically. The first session is about finding exactly where your points are leaking, whether that's careless math errors, pacing on the reading passages, or a few grammar rules that keep tripping you up. From there, each session is built around two things: drilling targeted problems and teaching the concepts behind them, so you understand why an answer works rather than just memorizing it. Between sessions, you get focused homework on your specific weak areas so the gains stick. We don't just grind through random full-length tests.
What sets me apart is the combination. I scored a 1570 myself, and I've already been coaching personal friends and family friends, all of whom got a score of above a 1500, including one student who went from a 1140 to a 1550. I know what actually moves a score, and I can explain it in a way that clicks for someone close to your own age.

Before working with John I kept running out of time and panicking on test day, which wrecked my scores no matter how much I studied. He helped me build an actual pacing strategy and got me comfortable with the digital format, so by the end I wasn't rushing or second-guessing myself. He's super patient and breaks everything down step by step, and he never made me feel behind. The difference on my real test was night and day. Highly recommend him to anyone who gets stressed about the SAT.
Reading and writing was always my worst section, especially the grammar questions, which honestly just felt random to me before. John completely changed that. He has a really structured way of teaching writing where instead of guessing, you learn the specific rules and patterns that keep coming up, so you actually know what each question is testing. We spent most of our sessions attacking my weak spots, and it worked - I went from dreading that whole section to walking in knowing exactly what to look for. Finished with a 1520. He's organized, explains things clearly, and actually cares whether it clicks for you. 100% recommend.
I'd been studying for the SAT on my own for months and basically plateaued. Working with John was completely different from grinding alone. He's really strong at math and would break down problems in ways that finally made sense, especially the ones I kept getting wrong without knowing why. What I appreciated most was how organized every session was - we always had a plan, worked on the stuff I actually needed, and he gave me homework that targeted my weak spots instead of random worksheets. He's chill, genuinely encouraging, and clearly knows the test inside and out. My score went up way more than I expected. If you're serious about improving, work with him.
I started working with John when my SAT was stuck in the 1100s and I honestly didn't think I could move it much. He figured out fast where I was actually losing points - for me, it was timing on reading and lots of math mistakes — and we drilled exactly those instead of just doing endless practice tests. The biggest thing was that he actually explained why answers worked, so I stopped guessing my way through. I ended up at a 1550. He's patient, easy to talk to, and never once made me feel dumb for not getting something. Can't recommend him enough.
