About Yizong

Even when I was a child, I dreamed that one day when grown up, I would be a teacher. During middle school, I found that physics, chemistry and mathematics are all quite useful. Therefore, I majored in physics at the Teaching University I attended in China. As I accumulated more knowledge of physics, I started to realize that in addition to usefulness, physics, as well as chemistry and mathematics, unbelievably beautiful and fantastic.

About the lesson

A good physics lecture should be accurate in science, logical, and interest the audience. It is important to me that students become engaged in the physics principles. Another essential requisite to a good lecture is the teacher should fully understand the subject he teaches. Because of this, I have been studying and pondering physics and pertinent mathematics since I was introduced to physics in middle school. After getting my PhD, I was invited to do research in growing single crystals at the Max-Planck Institute in Germany and at Hebrew University. Although I enjoyed the chance to work abroad, I finally gave up the positions and returned to China to teach for eight years. I taught more than 20 courses that covered all the major content of physics and nearly ten courses of advanced mathematics, such as calculus, partial equations, complex functions, probability theory, etc. July 2012, I arrived at the University of Minnesota as a post-doc researcher.
Although there are countless contents in physics, only about ten equations govern all the motion that occurs in the universe. For example, all the content of classical electrodynamics can be derived from Maxwell’s equations which were established by three experimental facts and one hypothesis. Using four dimensional space, four of Maxwell’s equations can be compacted into one equation from which all the content of electricity, magnetism and optics can be deduced. Such a summary approach can allow students to grasp the outline of what they are learning very quickly.
In addition to the content of any course, the background of every theorem and formulae is also important to arouse the students’ interest. Physics is a science of experimentation; demonstration experiments are an effective way to help students to digest what they learn from textbooks. Accurate expression by mathematical equation makes physics into an art.
Teaching demands countless hours of work, but it is work I enjoy. I will do my best for my students through imparting my real love of physics.
