About Connie

I am a masters student currently on the Early Modern and Renaissance Studies MA course at the University of York. This degree is an interdisciplinary course where I am able to not only explore traditional historical avenues into the past but also interpretations from anthropological, sociological, artistic, literature, and political points of view. I did my undergraduate degree at UCL where I met a lot of wonderful academics and had access to an incredible bank of resources which I used throughout my degree. I hope this elucidates my multifaceted skillset and shows my ability to apply my learned skills to a range of tutoring topics/subjects.

I have recently been volunteering as a tutor in A-level politics with a student impacted by the pandemic to increase her predicted grades. We have been working consistently every week together and throughout the week she sends me written answers to practice examination questions, and I respond with comments for improvement. I have been flexible with adapting sessions as circumstances have changed such as school moving online for my tutee but I do ask that I am given at least 24-48 hours notice. We each respect one another's time in this way.

Overall, I simply enjoy helping others to appreciate the weird and wonderful events of the past. I like to come to my sessions with an open mindset ready to talk through any problems and hopefully have fun discussing the nitty gritty of the past.

My teaching style predominantly focuses on the topics the student finds hardest and I like to understand where the sessions are most needed rather than reviewing content the tutee is already confident in. I find that this is the most valuable use of time. Equally, if there is a really big sticking point, rather than remaining stuck in a rut then it may be useful to go over a topic the tutee is more comfortable with as a form of confidence-boosting revision. Of course, each student responds to different ways of approaching a large amount of content revision thus teaching has to adapt in response to individual needs.

I like to use colours and images in my teaching as a form of making the content memorable, and some diagrams can be useful for explaining certain concepts and ideas. I am also aware that some people are not visual learners in this way so again I think forms of teaching have to be flexible to fit the individual so I am open to whatever is needed by the student in order for them to learn and remember. Equally, short bursts may be better for some students rather than long sessions where they may get distracted so I think there is always an important discussion to have before the sessions start with the student and/or parents about what helps them to learn.

Most importantly, an open and positive attitude to learning must be there from beginning to end even if the topic becomes tricky. I think it is imperative to remain positive because otherwise the brain is already defeatist and unmotivated. Positivity and openness go hand-in-hand to make a productive learning environment.

Details

My rates are based on A-level student sessions but are £9 per hour for GCSE levels or lower. If the tutee needs to cancel then I need at least 72 hours notice for a complete cancellation or 48 hours for a reschedule. Of course flexibility will be exercised in most cases where possible.
