During both the first and second waves, manufacturing was hit hard. The majority of the manufacturing sector had to work at a reduced capacity or shut down in order to control the spread of the coronavirus. Manufacturing of non-essentials was hurt harder and for a longer period of time. Furthermore, following the initial wave, the global and local supply networks had not entirely adjusted. This has resulted in increasing raw material costs for both small and large businesses. The IHS Markit India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell to 50.8 in May 2021 from 57.5 in February, according to the IHS Markit India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI).
Agriculture sector was also hit as the APMC mandis were closed during the peak harvesting season.From April to August 2020, average pay increase in the agriculture sector fell to 2.9 percent (2nd wave) from 8.5 percent in November 2020 to March 2021 (1st wave).
