About Matthew

I am a tutor with over 10 years of experience and I have worked with a wide variety of students. I tutor because I enjoy helping students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. Academic success is the result of the work that I do with my students, but it is not our singular goal. I strive to instill the belief in my students that they can succeed, even in challenging subjects. I have tutored students from elementary to high school to university in economics, finance, business, math, English, physics, and chemistry.

My tutoring history began with peer tutoring in high school in English and math. While completing my Bachelor's in Honours Economics, I led the after school reading program at the Waterloo Public Library and and through the Somali refugee homework program at Frontier College I tutored ESL students in English, math, and science. I also volunteered at the Community Music School where I taught guitar lessons. In addition, I have worked as a counsellor at a special needs camp. While completing my Master's in Economics, I worked as a teaching assistant for two courses: Introduction à la macroéconomie (first year) & Money and Banking (second year). Since then I have continued to tutor students of all ages.

About the lesson

I teach Economics to students in high school and university. I take an individualized approach to make sure that the lessons resonate with my students and that they feel confident and empowered. I perform an intake to get to know my students, as well as an initial assessment to determine what we will aim to accomplish and to identify areas of improvement. My lessons are a collaborative process - I do not talk at students, I work with them on the goals that we set together. I provide manageable timelines and I tailor the work to each student's needs and interests. Students receive regular feedback and a detailed plan of our work going forward. I have helped many students achieve academic success, while also developing the non-academic skills for success in other endeavors.
