Mathematical modeling, the art of expressing problematic situations in our environment through mathematical language. The goal of modeling is to solve problems using a mathematical model. Either way, solving a problem, usually once quantified, requires detailed mathematical formulation. From this perspective, a set of mathematical symbols and relations which seek to translate, in one way or another, a phenomenon in question or a real situation problem, is called a "mathematical model".
