About Thomas

My enthusiasm for my subjects is driven by my cross-disciplinary studies between Economics, History and the social sciences, first critically examining them in depth, then examining how these areas shape the world around us. In my experience economics shapes the society we live in, and a rounded and deep understanding of this is indispensable, giving students the tools they need not only to excel in their academic endeavours but also in their future careers. Closely interlinked with this is history, my first experience in the satisfaction which academic pursuits can offer, after gaining a better understanding of the little known ‘Opium Wars’ of the 19th Century, on which my EPQ project was based. Unlike many other tutors, I have not only excelled in academic studies, but also in my extra-curricular activities, utilising my economics knowledge by competing the ICAEW national BASE challenge final, achieving ‘highly commended’. Additionally, I nurtured the creative flair of younger students by establishing my Sixth Form’s debating Union, still going strong today. By taking a thematic approach to how I teach my pupils, I cover in depth the concepts and mechanisms at the heart of the subject, giving students not only the breadth of knowledge required to properly prepare them for exams, but also the topic specific case studies and evidence that unlocks higher marks.

About the lesson

When I first meet a learner, I will introduce myself and my interests in the subject, then begin to understand how I can optimally help the student with their individual needs. One of the key ways in which students compete well within the exam system is through confidence, and so instilling the fact that with the correct preparation students can achieve their goals, even if they have previously been struggling in the classroom. An early part of my learning process is assessing whether the pupil is struggling with small parts of the content, exam technique, or a wider combination of both. I then take a thematic approach, breaking town often complex processes and topics in to achievable chunks and depending on the timeframes available, prioritise the strengths of the individual to best meet their needs. Each of my sessions will be split in to learning, revision or exam preparation depending on which is required, this enables me to avoid areas in which students are all ready strong, and instead focus on segments which require the most improvement. I always dedicate what I personally found to be the most powerful learning technique, that of me allowing the student to elaborate and discuss the ideas, in a which leads students to express the ideas in question, aiding retention and boosting attainment.
