About Zahranur

Throughout secondary school and sixth form, maths has been one of my favourite subjects and I am fortunate enough to have it incorporated into my degree. I believe that maths is not just a subject, but a core language that people should be fluent in because we are surrounded by it. I hope to leave my students with the same passion in maths that I left school with.

About the lesson

I am a passionate (although new) tutor who focuses on teaching that aligns to the student's learning style, the lesson is about the student and not me.

My general lesson structure for geography will be going over the topic by reading textbook notes whilst actively making a mind map that both the student and I can edit. This will make the student recall what they've just read and rewrite it in a way that they understand better. If students are visual learners I will also implement diagrams for topic areas that may be better understood that way. After initially learning it, I will go through pre-made flashcards with the student (at the end of the lesson) to solidify their knowledge. For the following lessons I will recap what was learned the previous weeks using the mentioned flashcards, to keep the knowledge in the long-term memory.

I focus on weak areas whilst going over strong topics to make sure they're in the long-term memory. For the first lesson I will go through a checklist for the subject with the student and label the topics/subtopics green amber and red (for how well they know them). Based off of this I will then teach the red topics first as most urgent, and then move onto the amber topics. This way, the weaker areas are prioritised to make sure the student has a well-rounded understanding for the subject. In most cases, especially in maths, understanding one topic is very useful in other areas of the subject.

I will start with the checklist format to identify weak areas. Then when it comes to learning, I will do a walkthrough with the student using examples until they understand the method. I will then do independent questions where I can help where needed. After this the student will attempt 2-3 questions completely on their own while being timed, which I will then mark and show how to do (if they were unsuccessful). Maths is all about practice and application, so I want my students to understand this.
